Afternoon Snack

Welcome to the first Afternoon Snack last month of the year! We had a lot to chew on this week.

RIP Rookie Mag, the best magazine by and for teens that possibly ever was. Tavi Gevinson, who started Rookie when she was 15, left us with this lovely and heartwrenching sendoff.

Elsewhere in the Media Hellscape, we learned that the Thrillist essay on a food reviewer’s supposed destruction of America’s Best Burger Joint left out A WHOLE LOT about the business owner. (Content warning for intimate partner violence.)

This essay entitled “Now That I’m Divorced, I’m Never Making Dinner for a Man Again” filled us with unholy wrath for shitty husbands, and undying love for the writer in equal measure.

The only good man — the ONLY ONE — is Bruce Springsteen.

On the other hand, who needs men, when you can have a symbiote.

We are still in awe of the absolutest unit, Knickers the Cow, who escaped death with his sheer glorious size!

Even if we can’t all be Huge Cows, maybe one of you will get to be an employee of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, America’s most Millennial congresswoman??

Not only will we never get tired of reading N. K. Jemisin’s books, we’ll also never get tired of reading about them.

“I just want to write about things blowing up. Gods and planets and moons crashing into things,” she tells me. “But what I write ends up being very political. If I write about dragons, I’m writing about dragons as a black woman, and it’s fucking political.”

God bless the Year of Our Lord Satan 2018, which has enabled a best-of list dedicated to women’s rage in books.

AV Club’s best comics of 2018 has some of our faves on it, too!

Spongebob was too pure for this Earth and now we’re crying.
