Afternoon Snack is now on Tuesdays. Mondays are cancelled from here on out, tell your friends.
First off, HUGE CONGRATS to POME pal & contributor Gaby Epstein, who is drawing the official Danny Phantom graphic novel!! We are so excited and proud!!!
After cancelling Mondays, we are coming for exploitative Master’s degrees. If you never made it in to grad school, or if you did and feel like you got a bad deal, you’re probably going to feel very vindicated by Anne Helen Petersen’s “The Master’s Trap” series. This second part came out on her Substack last week, but it’s free to read, and includes a link to the first part.
San Diego Comic-Con at Home had a wonderful panel line-up this year, and we were especially excited to see the Manga Publishing Industry Roundtable moderated by Deb Aoki, because have you met us? The fascinating talk covers challenges in licensing long-running titles for English translation, the rising popularity of LGBTQ+ and BL manga, and lots more!
But if manga isn’t your thing, may we also recommend: Gaming in Graphic Novels with POME faves Jen Vaughn, Henry Barajas, and Kieron Gillen?
Speaking of hot manga trends, can we very respectfully request a sports manga based on this PERFECTLY sports-manga-esque real-life lesbian couple playing against each other in the Olympics???? Please??????
We won’t be saying much more about the Olympics (probably?) because there’s just a lot to unpack… But we will leave you with the absolutely delightful, officially government-commissioned Australian Olympic team furry mascots, who have been printed on real Australian money. YOU’RE WELCOME.
