Afternoon Snack

You’ve worked hard this week, this month, this year. Take a little break with us and have a taste of the brownie-corner-pieces of the internet!

Folks, we found it. The best website on the internet, right here, plucked straight out of the year 2000. We called our therapists to verify that clicking on this link is a radical act of self-care.

The official Pantone colors of 2021 have been announced, a so-called “marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.” We, the lowly denizens of Online, have… other associations with the sunny and slate pairing.

As 2021 approaches, the race for coronavirus vaccinations is officially underway, with healthcare workers being the first in the U.S. to receive the vaccine. Other groups are vying for prioritization, including the League of United Latin American Citizens. LULAC, the nation’s largest Latino civil rights organization, “is calling for agriculture, meatpacking plant and grocery store workers to be included in the initial distribution of COVID-19 vaccines.” If the powers that be care about protecting racial minority groups, this would be a sound move, as more than half of Black, Latino, and Native American workers hold jobs that require in-person contact.

Congrats to the staff of POME’s hometown paper, the Austin-American Statesman, for starting a union! Fingers crossed for a swift campaign and bargaining.

Elsewhere in labor news, Indian agriculture workers participated in the largest general strike in human history at the beginning of December, revolting against reforms that allow corporations to lower prices and therefore, the cost of labor. As in many other arenas, the U.S. labor movement has much to learn from the “global South,” where much of the world’s most underpaid workers reside.

There’s a lot of good-cry content going around as folks reminisce on the past year, but this Twitter thread about a 4-year-old and her fairy garden has to take the cake. Read in full for the maximum effective dose of faith in humanity.
