This article is titled “Witches Allegedly Stole Penises and Kept Them as Pets in the Middle Ages” and that’s really all you need to know. Well, that and it links to a full 33-page academic paper published in the Journal of Folklore Research that goes even more in-depth into the nature of witches and the tree they kept dongs in. For those of us that read On the Banks of Plum Creek (of the Little House on the Prairie series) when we young ‘uns, the image of cruel Ma forcing little Laura to give up her doll stuck with us as an example of the unfairness of the adult world. In reading the book with her young son, one mother re-examines Ma’s motives and the ways that mothers have traditionally been forced to navigate the intense individual desires of family members among the larger trails of survival and society. TLDR maybe Ma wasn’t such an asshole after all.
