Afternoon Snack

POMEs, since our last update we’ve officially MET OUR KICKSTARTER GOAL!! We’ve got 2 days left in our campaign, which means there’s still time to meet our stretch goal and to help us pay a higher page rate for each of our contributors.

In the meantime, here is a carefully curated Afternoon Snack to get you through the week.

CUTE

We don’t have anything to say about the Kanye stuff that other people haven’t already said, but we do love and appreciate this piece from Okayplayer with book / documentary recommendations that Kanye (and many of us, tbh) could benefit from as “free thinkers”.

An EXTREMELY cute Kickstarter for you to throw money at — BFF! It’s an rpg of girlhood, friendship, and adventure! The illustrations are so cute and charming and the whole thing just looks like such a lovely experience. More games like this, please!

A little while ago, we shared the piece Junot Díaz wrote for The New Yorker. Now, several women (and more and more and more) have come out about their own experience with Díaz, and it’s extremely troubling. When somebody you admired and supported for years turns out to be an abusive jackass, it feels like a betrayal, and it’s exhausting. It’s important to call them out though, and to support the people in the community that were affected (directly or indirectly) by the abuser’s actions. So, if you feel like we do, know that we love you and we’re here for you.

Also, this thread is the best reaction we’ve seen:

In a sharp turn, we hope you had a chill Star Wars Day.

We are here for this remake.

An extremely one-sided take (not in a good way) on the increasing popularity of “morality clauses” in publisher contracts. Hey publishing industry — do better.

In better publishing news, thousands of freelance writers have finally been paid for work that was distributed digitally without payment over a decade ago. After 17 years of litigations, the checks are in the mail.

Smart infrastructure!!! is!!!! important!!!!!

That’s all for this week, POMEs. We’ve got a busy few weeks ahead of us — with our Kickstarter ending, we’ll begin sending out rewards, and we’re also attending TCAF and VanCAF this week and next. We’re so excited!! If you happen to be going to those events, be sure to come out and say hi!

Crones of the Year 2023

As we spiral ever further towards certain catastrophe on this interminable mortal coil, there are some lights of hope that pass fleetingly by. Most often: the crones or otherwise eternal baddies found in all of our favorite escapist media. And so we present our top ten 2023 Crones of the Year.
